Life Of A Kappa
The life of a Kappa includes activities such as community service, dances, academic support, Sister retreats, social events, meetings, rituals and inter-Greek events (Greek week), just to name a few. The sorority decides what and how many events to have each semester.
One of the aspects of sorority life that most people do not understand, but that contributes significantly to the bonds we have as Sisters, is ritual. Rituals are the secret ceremonies and activities the Sisters do. There are rituals to celebrate different occasions in the sorority, and to strengthen the bonds we have with our Sisters or a regular basis. Rituals can vary so much in structure, depending on their purpose, that they are difficult to explain, especially since most of them are secret.
Each week the Sisters hold a business meeting to decide on such things as when and where to have events, and what community service projects to work on. These meetings are run using Robert’s Rules of Order, which is the set of rules used to run almost any organization or business meeting making it a great experience to have for the professional world. The goal is for everyone to work together and for the work to be divided up so that we have more time to enjoy our friendships and our Sisters.
Each organization has a specific charity, called a philanthropic organization (sometimes called "a philanthropy"), which they contribute time, sorority money, and energy to support. Aside from this one charity, organizations may contribute to other organizations or causes as well. The members decide what additional community service work will be done each year. By nature sororities are social organizations. Sisters take time to plan events with each other and other organizations, and they have a lot of fun doing so. You will notice that as you get more involved in an organization that you will begin getting to know many people in the Greek community. You will meet people in fraternities and other sororities. You will never be asked to replace your friends with Greek friends, so be prepared for your circle of friends to grow! Click here to find out more about our social events.
In order to sponsor events and functions as an organization, a sorority needs some source of income. Sororities plan fundraisers and members pay dues to support the organization and the community service projects in which they participate. Click here to find out more about our fundraising events.
